Steep, Alter, Ritual

Steep, Alter, Ritual at USC Roski Graduate Gallery examines how personal and communal rituals can transform the monotony of modern life and linear, productivity-driven notions of time. Rituals foster deeper human connections and introspection, cultivating meaning and presence in a world dominated by digital isolation and efficiency. Curated by the Master of Arts 2025 Curatorial Practices and the Public Sphere cohort, this exhibition features artists from diverse cultural and social backgrounds. The exhibition showcases work across media, including painting, photography, video, printmaking, and installation. Featured artists explore how rituals create moments of reflection and connection, offering new perspectives on how symbolic actions shape our identities and shared experiences across cultures and generations.

Our Patch: LGBTQ+ Life from Cradle to Grave

Our Patch: LGBTQ+ Life from Cradle to Grave was One Institute’s tribute to the diverse yet deeply intertwined histories of LGBTQ+ community care and movement-building in Los Angeles. The archival ephemera—including photographs, videos, oral histories, printed matter, correspondence, and artist books—provided insight into the multifaceted organizing strategies and care practices undertaken by LGBTQ+ activists at every stage of life, from youth to old age.

The exhibition showcased never-before-seen materials from the collections at ONE Archives at the USC Libraries including: activist Lee Glaze, owner of gay bar, The Patch, multiracial social and political organizations like Black & White Men Together (BWMT), Asian/Pacific Lesbians and Gays (A/PLG), the Multi-Ethnic Gay and Lesbian Exchange (MEG/LE), Clothespin Fever Press (Carolyn Weathers & Jenny Wrenn), Virginia Uribe, a teacher who founded Project 10, a support and drop-out prevention program for queer public school students, and Gerardo Velázquez (curated by artist Jessica Carolina González).

Our Patch: LGBTQ+ Life from Cradle to Grave was on view at the Los Angeles LGBT Center and was organized by ONE Institute and co-presented with the Los Angeles LGBT Center as part of Circa: Queer Histories Festival 2024. The exhibition was co-curated by Andy Campbell, Robert Brady, and Jessica Carolina González. Loans and digitized exhibition copies courtesy of ONE Archives at USC Libraries.
